Big county - small science
Nanofactory has access to six leading commercial centres based at the regional universities:
Polymer Interdisciplinary Research Centre - Soft Nanotechnology
The Polymer IRC brings together skills and resources in macromolecular science and technology from four leading Universities (Bradford, Durham, Leeds and Sheffield). It represents over 100 full time academic staff engaged in core scientific and industrial projects. Technical areas covered include:
- The synthesis of novel polymer architectures
- Reactive processing and blending
- Polymers for electronics
- Biologically related macromolecules
- Microscale polymer processing
- Theory and modelling
- Micro- and nano moulding of polymers
NanoManufacturing Institute - Enabling science for nano-manufacturing
The NanoManufacturing Institute (NMi) draws upong the University of Leeds' substantial science and technology base in nanotechnology. It undertakes fundamental and applied research focussed on overcoming the problems of scale-up and high-throughput manufacturing of consumer products with a nanotech component.

Centre for Technical Textiles - Nanotechnology enabled textiles
The centre offers consultancy and knowledge transfer services in textile materials and manufacturing, to assist product development and innovation.
Centre for Precision Technologies - Producing and measuring surfaces at the nanoscale
The Centre for Precision Technologies (CPT) is a commercial organisation that assists companies with advanced testing and collaborative research programmes. It also offers training in precision engineering and metrology.
EPSRC National Centre for III-V Semiconductors - Tailor made materials and devices
This centre is internationally renowned for its production of state-of-the-art semiconductor device fabrication capabilities. Specialising in III-V semiconductors, the centre provides high quality research grade materials to collaborators, primarily in the UK.
Materials and Engineering Research Institute - Routes to innovation
A large advanced equipment base ranging from the latest electron microscopes to high performance computing hardware supports MERI’s research and consultancy activities. The institute's research covers a broad range of topics from semiconductors to concrete and from theoretical modelling to coatings. The majority of MERI's work is with partners in the commercial sector.
